Google and Sun: The WTF? Factor
So much like everyone else, I too was surprised at the level unimportantness of the Google-Sun announcement a few days ago. Everyone in the IT press and their dog wrote their stories and opinions about what Google and Sun were going to announce. I read opinions ranging from the possibility of Google Office to Google OS all the way to Google powering those wheelchairs you often see those old ladies with. Wirelessly. And from a webinterface, ofcourse.
No but seriously, when I finally got to read the press releases and saw that they just announced that Sun would offer Google’s toolbar for download with Java, I couldn’t do anything but stare at my monitor. I kept staring for 5 minutes as my mind was basically in a deadlock because one of the threads in my brain locked a critical section and didn’t want to let go of it so other threads could continue to do their stuff. I managed to get up after a while, make some coffee, come back and continue to stare at my monitor as I was trying to figure out what the hell I just read.
This just goes to show all of us that the incredible hype around Google is just so stupid right now. Anything they seem to do or announce, doesn’t matter if it actually is cool or not, just gets blown up like it’s the second coming of Christ. The cure to cancer. Nude pictures of Hillary Duff.
To be fair it is probably just the press who are responsible for building so much hype around the company, while Google doesn’t really seem to be asking for it. Perhaps Google’s behavior also contributes a lot to it. Personally I wouldn’t like all this unconditional hype. Might bite you in the future. Watch out, Google.
