Adolf Hitler and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom: useAutoBahn = true

Earlier this week I had a problem when using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Lightroom would freeze every time I went from the Library module into the Develop module, and sometimes when I switched photos in the Develop module.

It turns out that this is caused by a bug, either in Lightroom itself or in the videocard drivers from AMD. Adobe has more information about this on their website, including the videocard models that are affected and other details.

For now the only way to avoid this problem is to disable hardware acceleration in Lightroom. You won’t be able to do that from within Lightroom however, because the moment you click the checkbox to disable hardware acceleration, the program freezes again.

You’ll have to use the following workaround:

  1. Close Lightroom and find the file “Lightroom 6 Preferences.agprefs” which (depending on your Windows installation) can usually be found in “C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Preferences” and open it in Notepad.
  2. Search for the word “useAutoBahn” and behind it, change the word “true” to “false”. This will disable hardware acceleration.
  3. Save the file and start Lightroom again.

Hopefully Adobe or AMD will have fixed this soon.

What I found very interesting is the use of “AutoBahn” for the hardware acceleration setting. As you may know, the Autobahn is the legendary highway system built in Germany and initiated by Adolf Hitler in 1933. The autobahns in Germany formed the first high-speed road network in the world. So it’s easy to understand why engineers at Adobe used the “useAutoBahn” name for the hardware acceleration setting in Lightroom.

And who knows, perhaps they also know the truth about Adolf Hitler. I wouldn’t be surprised. To the entire Lightroom team at Adobe: Sieg Heil!
