Jim Carrey has been receiving quite some attention in the press because of some “controversial” things he said recently in a few interviews. People are wondering whether Carrey is going through a depression or simply going crazy. Read more ⟶
Censorship on Minds.com; Pay attention Bill Ottman
In June 2017 I learned about a new social media website called Minds.com. Read more ⟶
Court rules that Politicians blocking followers on Social Media violates Free Speech
Back in October 2016 I had blogged about my experiences with censorship on Facebook, where I mentioned that the reporting functionalities provided by the social media network were “being abused […] to harass, silence and censor people, and is a serious violation of every individual’s natural right to free speech.” Interestingly a judge in the USA seems to agree in at least one specific instance: Court Rules That Politicians ... The Sony α9: Canon, patience is running out
The first camera I ever bought was the Sony Cybershot DSC-F717. That’s when I first had enough money to be able to afford my very own digital camera and really take up photography as a hobby. At a price of around 1000 USD it wasn’t exactly cheap either and it was definitely more of a prosumer camera. Soon after that I upgraded to the newer model, the Sony Cybershot DSC-F828, and after that the Sony Cybershot DSC-R1. Read more ⟶
Messages from the Universe – Part 3
Continuing where I left off in the previous post in this series, in the months following that post, I experienced what I can only describe as an onslaught of the numbers 3, 6 and 9 in various combinations of 3 digits. It seemed as though the timing in so many events in my life were synchronized according to those numbers. Every time something significant happened I’d look at my phone and the time would be a combination of 3, 6 and 9 (e.g. Read more ⟶
About the voice-over for my website intro
When I started working on the intro for my new website in late 2015 I knew I would eventually want some voice-over to go along with the titles appearing on screen. I had looked online for voice talent on websites like voices.com, and had found a few people that had the type of voice I was looking for. One of them — my first choice — was L. Harvey Gold. An explanation for my website intro
There’s a lot of thinking that went into the creation of the intro sequence that I have on the homepage of my new website. It’s based on years of my personal research into trying to find out more about life and about the reality that we live in, much of which you can read about in my post on the All Seeing Eye and the Cycle of Life. In this post I’ll go through the sequence and explain what you’re seeing. Read more ⟶
My new website went live
Yesterday I launched a brand new design for my main website at kareldonk.com. It was long overdue considering that the previous design was launched all the way back in May of 2011. Six years is a long time on the Internet, and the old design was technically just not up to today’s standards anymore. I began working on this new website design in early 2015 mostly in my spare time. Read more ⟶
Economics is Pseudoscience; Economists are Stupid People
I’ve always hated economics and related subjects in school. I couldn’t explain exactly why back then, but it all seemed like worthless crap to me. Of course, like every other kid my age growing up in an authoritarian society, I had little choice but to sit through the lessons and try to get good enough grades (I used to barely pass those exams) so that I could please everyone else but myself. Delivering Photos to Clients on Custom USB Flash Drives
Earlier this year I started to think about alternative options for delivering photos to my clients. As a photographer I also shoot photos of various types of events (including corporate events, birthdays and weddings) and in the past I’ve used CDs and DVDs in custom designed albums and cases to deliver the final photos to my clients. But as I’m sure you’ve noticed, CDs and DVDs are getting old very fast now. Read more ⟶
On the Facebook 30-Day Ban and Censorship
This week I got temporarily banned, again, for 30 days on Facebook after someone apparently reported a comment I had published below a friend’s post. Much has been said about this ‘feature’ on Facebook, but I have more to add to the ongoing discussion on the Internet. Read more ⟶
Messages from the Universe – Part 2
Not long ago I had published a post here on my blog where I discussed some examples of “coincidences” happening in my life. In this post I want to share another very interesting case concerning the above picture. Ever since the recent price increases I’ve been closely monitoring the power consumption at my house; from time to time I check the electricity meter to record the date and amount. Read more ⟶
Convincing C programmers to switch to C++; A look at human thinking behavior
A few days ago I watched a CppCon 2016 presentation by Dan Saks titled “extern c: Talking to C Programmers about C++” and was pleasantly surprised by the information and insights he shared. I wouldn’t have expected this kind of information to be shared at a C++ conference, let alone a talk about C and C++. Read more ⟶
Messages from the Universe
I promised in previous blog posts that I would write more about the “strange coincidences” that happen in my life. I’ve already written about some of them, and you can find them here on my blog tagged under “coincidences.” In this post I’m going to write about a number of them that have to do with numerology. The Truth Offends; The Truth Hurts
Larken Rose published an excellent article (“You Should Be Offended”) recently where he discusses his experiences with confronting people with the truth. This article really resonated with me because I deal with very similar situations almost on a daily basis, and I share much of Larken’s views on this. Read more ⟶
The Presidential Portrait; Looking Back
Back in August 2010 I shot the official portrait for the president of Suriname. You can read all about it in a previous blog post titled “Photoshoot: President D. D. Bouterse of Suriname”. I used to be proud of this, but not so much anymore. To be sure, it’s usually an honor for any photographer to be chosen to shoot the official portrait of the president of a country. Read more ⟶
Jesus help me!
Many years ago one of my colleagues played a gospel song in the office during a break at one of my previous employers. I generally don’t like gospel or any other religious songs, but this one caught my attention because of the nice melody and because the female singer had a pleasant voice. You can listen to the song in the embedded video above. Read more ⟶
A story about me, a thief and the universe
The universe is a very strange and mysterious place. Sometimes things happen that we can’t explain. Things that go against our understanding of what the universe is and how it works. Things that mainstream science cannot yet explain and indeed even refuses to look at. We call it the “paranormal” — a term we use to label all strange and spooky experiences we have that we can’t find a rational explanation for. Read more ⟶
Hello from HTTPS, thanks to Let’s Encrypt
I spent the past weekend implementing HTTPS for my main websites, including this blog, and am glad to report that everything seems to have gone well. Condolences to the Slaves of Suriname
Today the “Republic” of Suriname is celebrating 40 years of “independence.” As you may know, the slaves of Suriname won their “independence” from the Netherlands in 1975. In reality what happened is that they just went from one form of slavery into another, while being fooled into thinking that they actually became free and independent. Read more ⟶
