Preview WMF and EMF images in Windows File Explorer

EMF and WMF Thumbnails and Preview in Windows File Explorer

A few weeks ago I was browsing through some old clip art folders containing Windows Meta File (WMF) images and noticed that I couldn’t view thumbnails for these images in Windows File Explorer. This made it difficult to find what I was looking for in folders containing hundreds of images. I searched online for Windows Shell Extensions that would enable thumbnails for these files, but the ones I found didn’t work for some reason. So I decided to write my own thumbnail and preview handler shell extensions for WMF and EMF (Enhanced Meta File) images.

I saw it as a nice opportunity for me to play with the new release of Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 on Windows 10, and also to get myself familiar with using GitHub.

As you can see in the screenshot above (taken on Windows 10), after installing the extension, you get thumbnails for WMF and EMF images in Windows File Explorer. You can also enable the Preview pane from the View tab above for a larger preview on the right of the selected image. So far I’ve tested the extension on both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows 7, 8 and 10.

If you are interested in using this extension, you can download the setup packages below. The C++ source code is available on GitHub. It’s provided under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International Public License, so you are free to use, modify and share it. Suggestions for improvements and bug-fixes are welcome.

Well, it’s gonna help! I can see them in the preview pane but not in the list pane, even tried larger icons.

Windows 10 Home 64-bit (tried installing both 32 and 64 bit versions of the program)
Computer type: Desktop
Update: 12/19/2015 4:11:11 AM (unfortunately not telling me what release that is).

  Hi Phil, if you have the 64-bit version of Windows 10, then you should definitely run the 64-bit setup (from the “x64” folder in the downloadable ZIP file). Try going into the Add/Remove Programs area in Control Panel, and uninstalling WMFPreview first. After uninstalling it, install the 64-bit version from the “x64” folder. You may need to clear your explorer thumbnail cache as well (use Google to find out how to do that).

Hello,
I really want to use this, but am uncertain how to “install” it. I’ve downloaded the zip file and don’t see anything that tells me how to install for windows 10 64 bit. I see hte folder called “setupx64”, but the one file inside is not something I’ve seen before.

  Hi Amy, in the “x64” folder there’s a Windows Installer file “setup.x64.msi.” Just double click that and it will run the installer and install the extension for you.

Hey so I downloaded and installed, (I have Windows 10 64bit), what now? Should I just be able to navigate to the files and have the preview automatically working? If so that’s not happening. I’m really excited for this and wondering where I went wrong!

  First make sure you have installed using the correct setup file for your platform (in your case, you should have run the setup.x64.msi installation file). Then make sure you enable large or extra large thumbnail view and/or the preview pane in Windows File Explorer (see the screenshot at the top of this post). If you’ve done this, then you should see the preview thumbnails.

Hi,
I downloaded and installed from the X64 folder, it installed without a problem but my wmf files still show as icons. I have set view on large and extra large but they are still icons. They do show up in the preview pane, however.

But, is there something I can do to get them to show in the file folder? Like you, I’ve got hundreds and having to click on each one to preview is rather laborious. When I’m working I’d prefer to move a little faster.

I have Windows 7 professional 64-bit os.

  Hi Wendy, the issue you are experiencing happens when you install the wrong version (64 or 32 bit) of the extension. Are you 100% sure that your OS is 64 bit and that you installed the 64 bit version of the extension? Go into Control Panel – System and Security – System on your PC and verify that your Windows is 64bit.

I had the same problem on WIn7 64-bit after installing the 64-bit installer, (preview pane worked, but main icon list did not), however the problem was solved by logging out and back in to Windows 7, or rebooting.

Ik herinner me dat Microsoft de wmf clipart en bijbehorende preview in explorer lang geleden heeft verwijderd vanwege security issues.
Op zich vind ik het zeker knap en nuttig dat je de functionaliteit weer terug hebt weten te programmeren in Windows10. Waarvoor mijn dank.
Maar hoe zit het nu met die security zaken?

  Security is altijd een risico helaas. Maar de broncode van mijn extensie is ook op GitHub te vinden dus kun je altijd zelf bekijken of laten bekijken door iemand als je zeker wil zijn dat die geen problemen heeft (en als wel, zie ik gaarne een pull request tegemoet 🙂 ). Natuurlijk kunnen er ook nog altijd issues in de gerelateerde Windows API van Microsoft zelf aanwezig zijn. Maar dat er behoefte is aan de functionaliteit merk je aan de comments. Compleet verwijderen van deze functionaliteit was niet de beste oplossing.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! It worked perfectly… once I figured out how to download it. There was no “download” button anywhere, but I finally saw the URL embedded in the two lines of code. After that it was a breeze. At first I wasn’t sure if the install had worked since there wasn’t any “install complete” or anything. But when I looked at Windows Explorer again, there they were… thumbnails images! Yay

Hallo Karel,

Bedankt voor dit hanige tooltje maar de preview lukt wel maar die icons blijven ongewijzgd. Ik het erop gelet de 32-bit versie te installeren.
Ik heb een WIn 7 Enterprise versie. Wat kan er fout zijn ?

  Hey Tom, als je de 32-bit versie hebt van Win7 moet je inderdaad erop letten dat je de 32-bit versie van de extensie installeert. Als dat gedaan is zou je wel de thumbnails moeten zien ipv de icons. Wat je nog zou kunnen proberen, is ten eerste je PC restarten. Daarna als je toch geen thumbnails ziet, kan je kijken als je de batch file “Clear_and_Reset_Thumbnail_Cache.bat” van hier kan downloaden naar je PC en dan uitvoeren. Het zal dan je thumbnail cache clearen. Mocht je daarna nog steeds geen thumbnails zien, dan kan het dat de bestanden geen WMF of EMF bestanden zijn die ondersteund worden. Je kan een paar van de WMF bestanden op de eerder genoemde link downloaden en kijken als je voor die wel thumbnails krijgt. Dat zou wel moeten.

Is there anything you can do to preview PDF files? The latest update for Win10 Pro 64bit didn’t fix it. In fact I can’t preview any files like txt or docx or xlsx.

  If you install Microsoft Office you can preview docx and xlsx files. For PDF you’ll need to install Adobe Acrobat.

  I think you’re looking for the “/quiet” command line option for Windows Installer. Check the details on Microsoft’s MSDN website here.

After googling for days I find you like a god send but I have the 32 bit os on windows 7 utlimate. What do you suggest for me? I did the installation of the x86 and funnily enough it did go through the process.

  In your case, after downloading the setup files, you should run the “setup.x86.msi” file in the “x86” folder. After you’ve done that, you should see the thumbnails appear in Windows File Explorer for WMF and EMF files.

Hi Karel

After installed program, i use windows API GetOpenFileName(), it can’t show thumbnail, but once showed it on windows explore, it can show on GetOpenFileName()

  The thumbnails get generated by Windows Explorer so it needs to have an opportunity to do so first. Try using the Common Item Dialog instead of GetOpenFileName:

Thank you very much, it is just I was looking for. It works well, but thumbnails and prevue are displayed only, when wmf-files are located on a hard disk. If they are on a DVD, the prevue is displayed only, thumbnails not.

  Yes for files on DVD or CD, Windows doesn’t display thumbnails, but does display the preview in the preview pane in Windows File Explorer. I’m not sure why this happens but will investigate. I suspect this might be for performance reasons.

Hey, I cannot see any other file in the setup folder, only Setupx64.vdproj. And I cannot run that one. How do I install it then?

  You downloaded the source code zip file. You need to download the setup zip file. It’s called WMFPreviewSetup[version].zip. Download it from the releases page on GitHub.

I installed wmfPreview on my windows 7. I unzipped the zip file and ran the setups. It didn’t have any affect. Apparently there’s only a dll file, not an exe. First I tried the 64 version but when that didn’t work I uninstalled it and tried the 32 bit version. Neither one worked. What am I doing wrong.

  You should first check which version of Windows you have (32-bit or 64-bit), then run the appropriate setup. Check out the troubleshooting page on GitHub.

  If you don’t see icons, either you installed the wrong version (32-bit/64-bit) or you need to clear your thumbnail cache or enable thumbnails. Please refer to the trouble shooting page I mentioned earlier.

So, I installed and reinstalled and did ‘stuff’ but it just didn’t seem to work right. Some WMFs showed up, some persisted in remaining icons. Could not figure out what was wrong—and why it worked fine on my laptop but not my office PC.

Finally, I discovered/realized the culprit was the fact that I had WMF files associated with CorelDraw and somehow that interfered. I switched that to MS Paint and everything worked perfectly!

Hi Karel,
in february 2017 I have installed the tool both for Win7 Ultimate 32Bit and Win10 Pro 64Bit. Under Win10 it worked well until the fall creators update, then it ceased working alas. Do you know what the cause could be? With Win7 it runs fine as before.

  It should work with the latest Win10, I verified it. Perhaps you should try uninstalling and reinstalling. Make sure you install the correct version (32-bit or 64-bit) depending on your Windows 10 version.

I’ve installed the correct 64 bit for Windows 10 but it isn’t working in either preview or thumbnails. My wmf files are stored (locally and cloud) in One Drive for Business. Is that the issue? Does it work with One Drive?

  Yes that might be an issue. Try copying the files to a folder on your local hard drive that is not a OneDrive folder.

I downloaded & installed WMF preview & it did work, however, it now doesn’t. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted PC & deleted iconcache & thumbcache (although not all files were able to be deleted) rebooted. Still not working. Very frustrated. Definitely 64-bit Win 10

  That’s really strange. It seems you’ve tried everything already that I would suggest. The only other thing I can think of is that perhaps there’s other software installed that’s conflicting with WMFPreview.

This program was successfully installed on my computer, had a crash in January & had to clean hard drive & start over, Windows 10, 64-bit. When I try to install this (and a few other apps) I get a message that I need to install .Net Framework 3.5. I’m hesitant to do anything. Is the .Net Framework 3.5 something that I should have installed on the new computer, or should I be concerned. Don’t want another crash! Thanks, Pam

  The .NET Framework 3.5 is a Microsoft software component that you can download and install from their website. It shouldn’t cause any issues.

Thank-you so much! This functionality was lost when I upgraded (?) from XP to Windows 8/10. It’s been annoying me for ages. I had been using Irfanview, but you have to click through every file. NOW I can quickly scan through 100’s of pics in seconds – and find what I want quickly.

Installation painless and rapid. Naturally it failed to work until I rebooted Windows but, once that was done all was well.

Can’t thank you enough! I just rehabilitated over 6,000 (yes, six THOUSAND) images that I painstakingly downloaded more than 10 years ago. With that many images, it sucks to lose the indexing (and therefore the search feature) but if I hadn’t been able to preview the images, they would have essentially been worthless.

Bloody marvelous! I’d copied a load of clipart from some old cd’s, but the preview software provided wouldn’t install (not even in windows95 compatibility mode. Yes, the cd’s were that old) not being able to preview them seriously reduced their usefulness, so your extension has made all the difference, so thanks.

Absolutely amazing!! Didn’t really look forward to opening hundreds of wmf clipart files one by one and deleting useless ones without being able to preview thumbnails.Saved me a TON of time and has made my job much much easier. AWESOME!!

I just wonder – that security patch, that disables preview in Vista – is it just small registry change? It looks logical to me more than making real changes in some of GDI+ dll. If so, it is possible just to turn it on back?
I’m going to compare registry settings related to WMF on Windows XP and Windows 8.1 and see what I can find

Wants to try this out, but wonder if it supports a different color/shape for ‘transparent’ part for emf files… especially if the only color used in it is white color.

  It creates a thumbnail with see through transparent parts, but since the Explorer Window background is also white, it might be difficult to see white shapes in the EMF unless you select the thumbnail first.

Hello all users,

As some of you may know, WMFPreview has had issues with displaying thumbnails in Windows File Explorer when the files are on a CD/DVDROM drive. You would need to copy the files over to a folder on your local hard disk for it to work. I have also had reports of the same problem when the files are on a Microsoft OneDrive folder.

I’ve done some more tests and it appears to be either a problem with Microsoft’s Software Development Kit (SDK) or a problem (bug) with the Windows Shell. This because Microsoft’s own sample application in their SDK called ‘RecipeThumbnailProvider’ has the exact same issue. I’ve also tried some extensions made by other people for other file types and they all have the same issue.

I reported the problem to Microsoft in 2 places:
- On GitHub for their ‘RecipeThumbnailProvider’ SDK sample
- On Developer Community for their C++ SDK
In order for Microsoft to hopefully look at this problem and help with a fix as soon as possible, it would be helpful if you would also go to the above links and leave a comment especially if you have also experienced the issue.

  Just commented in both threads. I got very excited about a fix for .WMF flies not showing as thumbnails, as this problem has been troubling me for quite a while. Very disappointed that MS will not make OneDrive usable.

Thank you. I really mean it.

Back in 1995 I bought a clipart package called NVTech’s Image Commander with a whopping 36,461 images. Of course, out of that only 10 percent are invaluable images that have served me well as a graphic artist. After having to give up my trusted WindowsXP, I found the program stopped working under Windows 11. I never threw out the original setup and contents folder because something you just don’t let go.

What you have given me is the opportunity to see everything again as thumbnails and I can now pick and choose my old favorites without the any NVTech installation. Thank you.

To anyone who installs this, don’t try to view immediately after installation. Make sure you restart your pc and all the WMF will show afterwards.

  So you installed it on Windows 11? In that case good to know it works well as I haven’t gotten the chance yet to test it on Windows 11.

After testing, the thumbnails and previews of EMF files can work in Win11(x64)
Thumbnails need to restart the computer

  I have just had the same experience.
  
  With Windows 11 Pro 21H2 64-bit the preview pane worked immediately, but I had to restart to make the thumbnails work.
  
  Thank you for a very useful utility, I don’t understand why Microsoft don’t make EMF files display properly.

Don’t we need both versions, 32 and 64bit?
Internal explorer dialogs in 32bit app seem to need 32bit for previews (unless the image cache is filled already). Is there any trick to get both installed?
