Unlock work internet or risk losing staff

I saw this article today about employers who restrict Internet access at work. I had written about this before. It’s still amazing to me that there are actually employers out there who restrict Internet access in any way. The article has some good information about Microsoft’s research into this.

However, it tries to tie this to Microsoft’s recent efforts into expanding their online advertising business, which ofcourse is stupid and missing the point. Google would benefit just as much.

This is not about advertising. It’s about the new world we live in. It’s about new ways of communication. It’s about new possibilities of using the Internet for work related things. And so much more.

When I got my first fulltime job about 7 years ago, I was astounded to find out on my first day that employees had restricted access to the Internet. I practically demanded full access, and had I not gotten it, I’d have quit the same week. And this was an IT company too. Just mind boggling.

As I said in my previous post on this subject: “I am never going to work for any company where I have a computer on my desk, but can’t access the Internet without restrictions, especially if it is a technology company.”
