My interview with De Ommekeer
Dutch independent journalist Tilasmi Frigge from De Ommekeer interviewed me about the Sinterklaas feast which is currently the subject of much controversy in the Netherlands. A group of people claim that it contains elements of racism, while another group draws parallels on one side between the white Sint-Nicolaas and his black servants, called “Zwarte Pieten” in Dutch, and on the other side the white master with his black slaves during colonial times.
Frigge was interested to hear about how people view the Sinterklaas feast in Suriname. I explain that while people in society are kept busy and distracted by such kind of superficial discussions that also drains their mental energy, the real underlying problem in society is allowed to continue to exist, namely, the fact that we’re all slaves that are being abused and exploited daily in the current anti-social system of enslavement that we live in. Instead of bickering about things like Sinterklaas, it would be more productive to focus our energy on exposing and getting rid of the current system of enslavement implemented worldwide.
