Symantec is right on schedule
Just like I expected, Symantec started complaining about Microsoft’s move in the security software market which was recently officially announced. They are right on schedule too. And I expect others to follow sooner or later as we approach the release dates of the security products Microsoft announced and Windows Vista.
Four years ago everyone was bashing Microsoft left and right for the lack of security in their products. Now that they are actually trying to take care of that, people are starting to complain again. It’ll be interesting to see if their complaints will have any results. I can however also understand why they complain. You see, if you’ve actually used Norton Antivirus and Firewall, and I do on a daily basis, you undoubtedly know what a bloated piece of software it is. If you just want to bring up the configuration dialog you’ll have to wait 10 seconds on a seriously fast machine. Not to mention the times when antivirus just doesn’t want to enable itself, conflicts with other software etc. etc. If you’re the developer of such software, it’s easy to understand your reaction as described above, when another big company like Microsoft merely announces to enter the market with their own product, of which you can expect will probably work better and faster. If you also know they have a much better and bigger supporting infrastructure, the power of integration with various other technologies and products, which they also own, then such a reaction is all the more understandable. Understandable, but perfectly normal. It’ll be a case comparable to Netscape and IE.
